Writing and Boys

Sometimes it seems more difficult to interest boys in expressing themselves in writing than it does to interest girls. Expressing thoughts, feelings, and ideas in writing is extremely important. As a writing teacher in 3rd-7th grade classrooms, I’ve written some helpful hand-outs to make narrative writing more interesting and clear-cut.

My middle son would turn every story assignment into a sports-related story because that was what he ‘knew’. And that’s okay for a while, but then he needed to branch out. He first learned about painting pictures with words about what he knew, the reaction of players and fans, not just what happened next. Then he began to write about other topics.
