Hi ladies,
Went to a book reading/discussion on Friday night at Duke. It was part of the North Carolina Festival of the Book, and they had some awesome authors lined up. One of my favorites has always been Jill McCorkle, who is a NC native but now lives in Boston because she teaches at Harvard. Her book, The Cheerleader, is one of my favorite books as are a number of hers; but, that one stands out because it really inspired me to write back when it first came out in the ’80s. Check out her books if you haven’t.
I was only able to get away that night because my two oldest boys
and my husband (okay, three oldest boys) were at a Scout camping
retreat, and my parents kept Jason for a few hours. So I didn’t have
baseball/basketball commitments that night. Anyway, I’m sitting there
at the seminar with my cell phone on vibrate when I get a call and look
at the number. It was my husband’s cell number. The event was over
about ten minutes later and I called him back, hoping everything was
okay. He was calling for the score of the Carolina Hurricanes hockey
play-off game.
Stuff like this happens all the time. Two weeks ago at my sons’ dentist
appointments, the receptionist came out and told me I had a call at the
front desk. She said it was my husband. My heart started pounding
because I thought maybe something had happened to my parents or other
loved ones. I picked up the phone and said. “What’s wrong?”
Kevin replied, “Tell the guys the Red Sox won in the bottom of the 9th. Mark Loretta hit a walk-off homerun.”
I paused a moment, looking at the three ladies in the dental office who
were all staring at me in concern. Then I said, “You called here just
to tell me that?”
I apologized to the ladies for having them have to get me for such an
unimportant call. They were really nice about it and laughed, but I
couldn’t believe he called the office. “Couldn’t get through on your
cell phone,” he explained.
Sharing scores of games is like a mission guys have, and they will stop at nothing to deliver the news.
A few weeks ago, I met with my publisher about my new book, House of Testosterone - A Mom’s Survival in a Household of Males. A humor book. It will be coming out in October, and I’m very excited about it. I’ll keep you all posted.
Take care,
Sharon
